Des régimes et des pouvoirs, des peuples et des États, des élections ou des coups de main, de la guerre ou de la diplomatie, de la résistance, de la réaction, que prétend-on voir et que peut-on prévoir ? En d'autres termes, à quoi sert la science politique ? Pour éclairer leur métier, les professeurs qui signent cet ouvrage ont ouvert les portes de leurs ateliers. Leurs chapitres prennent pour titre une question qui va au cœur de leurs travaux, et à laquelle ils répondent avec les outils de leur spécialité, sachant que leur recherche ne sera jamais achevée, ni leur réponse définitive. Le Département de science politique de l'Université de Montréal fête en 2008 son cinquantenaire. Rédigé pour l'occasion, ce livre veut être un état des lieux des travaux qui y sont menés et une célébration de la curiosité, du travail intellectuel, de la connaissance, de la liberté de penser et de la responsabilité d'enseigner.
