Abstract
The advent of the 40th anniversary 5th edition of this classical seminal textbook classifies it as the definitive work in the field of basic dental sciences. It succeeds its previous four editions, first published in 1988 and successively in 2002, 2005 and 2009 and now in 2018 with a hefty 25 × 30-cm soft cover edition displaying a cover collage of microscopic and X-ray images of odontology. The original team of three authors has thoroughly overhauled and augmented the previous 416-page edition to the current 461-page magnum opus with no increase in price over the previous edition, possibly attributable to its being printed in China. The 27 chapters range from ‘living anatomy’ through topographical ‘dissectional anatomy’ of vasculature, innervation, functional anatomy, histology and embryology of the components of the head. A feature of each chapter, apart from the superb photographic images, aided and abetted by masterful sectional sketches, is the clinical considerations pertaining to each orofacial region. The surgical approaches and radiographic images portrayed provide practical clinical and functional insights of various constituents of each region. Thereby, basic anatomy is projected into diagnostic, procedural and preferred treatment protocols for various aspects of oromasticatory morphology. Each chapter commences with an ‘Overview’, followed by integrated anatomical, physiological and biochemical information, and terminating with ‘Learning Objectives’. More's the pity that topological variability and age-dependent fluctuations from childhood to senility could not be incorporated into the range of transformations that characterize the different stages of life. However, this work still provides a foundation of functional anatomy by a consideration of physiological factors pertaining to the complexities of mastication, ingestion, deglutition and digestion. The detailed descriptions and accompanying illustrations of functioning components of muscles are masterful. Regrettably, facial expressions of smiling, whistling and osculation have been omitted! The ‘Evolve Student Resources’ feature requiring activation provides condensed essential information, and a wide range of true/false statements, extended matching and picture questions, aiding understanding and revision. Intermittent ‘Further Reading’ recommendations are appended to some chapters, with a variable list of references to previous works that are mostly current up to 2015. With the advent of facial aesthetics entering into the realm of current dental practice, the very brief section devoted to the superficial muscles of facial expression is disappointing in not providing guidance for the modulation of the creases and furrows that characterize the aging face. The sites of Botox (Botulinum toxin) injections for paralyzing the various crease-creating wrinkles of the countenance would have greatly enhanced the clinical functionality of this treatise. The omission of the origins and insertions of the facial mimetic muscles is a minor flaw in this extensive portrayal of physiognomy. The unresolved contentious issue of the mechanisms of tooth eruption is explored in depth, with stunning portrayals of dental development both photographically and radiographically. The listing of genetic disorders of tooth eruption is a commendable feature. The inclusion of archaeological and anthropological aspects of odontology expands the repertoire of dentistry into unusual disciplines that makes this work a tour de force. In conclusion, there is no other comparable textbook that can match this vade mecum on craniofacial anatomy, and is unreservedly recommended for all dental personnel.
