Après l’établissement de la frontière internationale entre le Maine et le Nouveau-Brunswick en 1842, l’État du Maine s’est engagé dans une politique d’assimilation des francophones de la vallée du Saint-Jean. Territoire contesté pendant de nombreuses années, la région du Madawaska disposait en 1842 d’institutions reflétant le mode de fonctionnement de cette communauté restée jusqu’alors relativement autonome. La barrière de la langue, l’identité de la communauté francophone du Madawaska, ainsi que la différence entre les institutions du Maine et celle du Madawaska ont constitué autant de freins à l’américanisation de la vallée du Saint-Jean. L’école publique est un des moyens d’encourager sinon l’assimilation, au moins l’acculturation. Cet article examine les répercussions de la politique assimilationniste du Maine sur l’établissement du système scolaire public au Madawaska. Il s’intéresse particulièrement à la formation des enseignants et aux aménagements spécifiques du système scolaire consentis par l’État du Maine dans le but de faire progresser sa politique assimilationniste.
