Les publics de la culture sont de plus en plus redéfinis, notamment grâce à la volonté des directeurs, conservateurs ou médiateurs qui œuvrent au sein des institutions culturelles. L’adoption par ces dernières de politiques actives destinées à capter de nouveaux publics permet de toucher des catégories d’usagers potentiels habituellement exclues de leur champ d’intervention. Cette dynamique s’élabore et prend place dans des établissements culturels et des organismes communautaires. C’est ainsi que le musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal avec son programme Le musée en partage, conçu et réalisé par son Département de l’éducation et de l’action culturelle, accueille depuis maintenant quinze ans des publics singuliers. On les nomme publics empêchés, publics écartés, visiteurs aux besoins particuliers, publics atypiques, autant de dénominatifs utilisés pour désigner des publics la plupart du temps exclus des pratiques culturelles, des expositions ou des musées. Que recouvre cette réalité au sein de l’organisation même du travail des professionnels de ce musée ? Une enquête conduite auprès des professionnels du musée a permis de mettre au jour l’hétérogénéité des concepts de la culture et du musée.
