Abstract
Cet article explore à travers le Québec ce que représente l’interpellation à apprendre la langue nationale pour appartenir à la société civile. La francisation des immigrants y est articulée en termes de contrat moral, de catégories linguistiques et de division de l’espace national. Les immigrants dits allophones – ceux n’ayant aucune des langues officielles canadiennes comme première langue – se doivent de devenir des locuteurs du français au risque d’être jugés comme faisant preuve de déficience linguistique ou comme étant susceptibles d’adopter des pratiques linguistiques illégitimes. Les régions, bastions traditionnels de la nation québécoise, sont imaginées comme un site parfait pour les franciser. Me basant sur un terrain ethnographique, je suggère que les immigrants allophones en région s’investissent dans leur francisation, mais qu’ils doivent interpréter cette interpellation qui mythifie et mystifie ce qu’est être un locuteur de français. Cette indétermination permet conjointement à la population locale de retravailler continuellement les frontières de l’appartenance légitime.
