Abstract
Our democratic societies are currently revising the place of the religious phenomenon in the public space, impelled by the resurgence of religious manifestations which occupy that space on the basis of identity claims. The sociologist from Quebec, Jacques Beauchemin, and the French philosopher Marcel Gauchet guide the theoretical reflection. The Canadian Catholic Church’s latest positions are studied in order to take stock of today’s identity shift. The changing focus we are now living through must unavoidably influence the theological constructions of the community of faith.
