Benefits of Application of Hexanal Compositions on Apples

Abstract
Apple is one of the most popular temperate fruits and is widely consumed for its numerous health benefits. Spontaneous fruit drop close to the time of harvest is a major issue in some apples. Apples show different levels of fruit drop, but some varieties are highly prone to this problem. Preharvest spray application of hexanal formulation can be highly beneficial economically in preventing fruit drop. Honeycrisp apples develop several physiological disorders during storage. Preharvest spray treatment with the hexanal formulation increased the firmness of Honeycrisp apples significantly. Preharvest spray treatment with hexanal formulation appears to reduce the development of bitter pit in Honeycrisp apple compared with control unsprayed fruit. Overall, it appears that hexanal formulations tends to enhance several qualities of apples, and may be applied alone or in combination with other techniques.
