Les Blaans de Little Baguio vivent d’agriculture et de chasse dans des montagnes situées au sud-est de l’île de Mindanao (Philippines). Ils ont été exposés au christianisme, mais ont conservé nombre de leurs traditions. Les auteurs se concentrent ici sur les connaissances et les relations que les Blaans entretiennent avec les oiseaux qui les entourent. Ils montrent que les oiseaux structurent leur temporalité – en particulier la cosmogonie et la vie quotidienne –, et définissent en partie leurs rituels et leurs règles sociales. Considérés comme d’anciens humains, les oiseaux constituent des médiateurs qui relient mieux que d’autres animaux les mondes visible et invisible. Dans cette perspective, les Blaans ne cherchent pas tant à prédire ou à prévoir l’avenir qu’à suivre les rythmes que leur donnent les oiseaux.
