El presente estudio examina los vínculos entre Japón y Canadá, focalizado en la visita de los emperadores nipones a Canadá en julio de 2009, dada la trascendencia que supuso dicho acontecimiento. En torno a este hecho clave se revisan las estrategias diplomáticas, el significado comercial y las reacciones populares a la luz de algunos datos tales como el rol del emperador para la cultura japonesa actual. Considerando el enorme tamaño del país más su diversidad interna, se centra el estudio en los vínculos con la ciudad de Vancouver en particular, situada en la región oeste del mismo. A tal efecto se inspecciona la prensa escrita de la época y se realiza entrevistas a informantes clave con el objeto de relevar qué clase de vínculos se tendieron a través del Pacífico.
