Abstract
Une phrase latine « In omnibus requiem quaesivi et nusquam inveni nisi in angulo cum libro – J’ai cherché le repos partout et ne l’ai trouvé que dans un coin avec un livre » parsème la littérature européenne, généralement attribuée à Thomas a Kempis (v. 13801471), dans son bestseller L’Imitation de Jésus Christ. En réalité, cette phrase ne s’y trouve pas : elle semble plutôt une sorte de devise personnelle, qui est arrivée jusqu’à nous par la lettre des estampes, sans cesse copiées et adaptées, représentant le portrait du religieux écrivain.
