Abstract
Die Perspektive dieses Beitrags konzentriert sich auf den Religionsunterricht in der Grundschule und auf weiterführenden Schulen als „kulturelle Tatsache“. Im Jahre 2008 hat Quebec entschieden, ein System, in dem konfessioneller Unterricht und Ethikunterricht als Wahlfächer angeboten wurden, zu ersetzen durch einen einheitlichen Kurs, der Ethik und Religionskultur verbindet (Éthique et culture religieuse; ÉCR). Dieser Kurs verbindet Ethikunterricht aus säkularer, kritischer und humanistischer Perspektive mit dem Vermitteln von religionskulturellen Inhalten. Dieses Programm ist nicht unumstritten und nicht selten wird die Frage gestellt, warum man Ethik und Religionskultur in einem Fach zusammenfasst beziehungsweise, warum an einer laizistischen Einrichtung überhaupt Religion unterrichtet wird. In diesem Beitrag versuche ich, indem ich den Sinn des ÉCR-Unterrichts unter Beweis stelle, die Idee zu begründen, dass das Unterrichten von Religionskultur sich konsequent aus dem Pluralismus ergibt und eine Bedingung für eine funktionierende Demokratie ist. Ich möchte ebenfalls zeigen, dass dies eine Grundbedingung dafür ist, mündige Bürger auszubilden, die die Welt von heute begreifen.
