Malgré son importance en tant que source de revenus pour des millions de travailleurs africains, l’exploitation aurifère artisanale ne génère en Afrique que peu de recettes pour les États producteurs. Sont en cause l’informalité du secteur de l’exploitation artisanale minière et à petite échelle (EMAPE) et des mécanismes de financement du secteur fort complexes tout au long de la chaîne d’approvisionnement, ce qui rend très difficile le contrôle du commerce de l’or artisanal et de ses acteurs. Dans cet article, nous nous sommes efforcée d’esquisser l’ampleur des dynamiques du commerce illicite de l’or artisanal en Afrique. En l’absence de statistiques globales fiables sur ce sujet, nous nous proposons ici de brosser un bref portrait de trois pays de l’Afrique de l’Ouest (Mali, Burkina Faso et Côte d’Ivoire), ainsi que de la région des Grands Lacs d’Afrique, en nous appuyant pour cela sur des recherches menées par l’ONG canadienne IMPACT (anciennement Partenariat Afrique Canada). Dans les deux régions africaines précitées, le commerce illicite de l’or s’effectue par contrebande transfrontalière : l’or est d’abord transporté illégalement du pays producteur vers un pays voisin, avant d’être exporté « légalement » comme s’il était issu de ce deuxième pays.
