Abstract
Engagé, en 1972, comme professeur au département d’histoire de l’Université Laval, Jean Simard y poursuivra une carrière fructueuse d’enseignement et de recherches, partagée en trois décennies d’activités axées sur de grandes enquêtes ethnographiques de terrain, sur la transmission des savoirs et savoir-faire par des formats autres que le livre, ainsi que sur le bilan des analyses scientifiques et des publications savantes. Un vaste cycle d’enquêtes systématiques (décennie 1970) mènera à la constitution de grands corpus ethnographiques portant sur l’inventaire de milliers d’artefacts et mentefacts tirés par Jean Simard de l’art et de la religion populaires. La décennie qui suit (1980) explorera de nouvelles approches de transmission des savoirs et savoir-faire, des années effervescentes, fébriles, caractérisées chez Jean Simard par la fièvre de communiquer au grand public des pans occultés et originaux de son patrimoine religieux, au moyen de séries radiophoniques, filmiques ou grâce à des expositions qui alerteront le grand public sur la déperdition de son grand héritage religieux. Le besoin se fait sentir enfin chez Jean Simard, dans la décennie 1990, de revenir à sa mission première d’être un marqueur scientifique de la culture québécoise. La publication de deux livres majeurs, Les Arts sacrés au Québec (1989) et Le Québec pour terrain. Itinéraire d’un missionnaire du patrimoine religieux (2004) rendront compte d’une trentaine d’années de recherches et de publications savantes qui vaudront à son auteur l’attribution par le gouvernement du Québec de la plus haute distinction dans le domaine du patrimoine, le Prix Gérard-Morisset 2017.
