Abstract
L’expérience de la Première Guerre mondiale fut un moment charnière dans l’histoire du dominion du Canada et représenta un premier pas vers une plus grande autonomie nationale vis-à-vis de l’Empire britannique. L’époque fut aussi marquée par de nombreuses crises et tensions sociales qui font aujourd’hui partie de la mémoire collective de l’expérience de la guerre. Une demande toujours plus importante d’effectifs militaires ainsi que des tensions accrues entre Canadiens français et Canadiens anglais réveillèrent des conflits sociolinguistiques sous-jacents et transformèrent le Canada en une véritable poudrière au cours des dernières années du conflit. Les villes de Montréal et de Québec furent le théâtre d’une grande partie de ces enjeux. Toutefois, la région de l’Outaouais, de par sa situation géographique unique, connut une expérience différente alors que les combats pour les droits de la minorité francophone se sont immiscés à l’avant-scène de la couverture médiatique de la guerre du quotidien régional Le Droit .
