Abstract
Cette étude décrit les étapes de la censure cléricale au Québec, qui a duré plus de cent ans – en gros, de 1840 à 1960 –, exerçant une gouverne importante sur la littérature, voire sur l’imprimé en général. Ce siècle de contrôle a toutefois été précédé par une longue période de censure aléatoire, désorganisée, qui s’amorce au XVIIe siècle. Contestée, au XIXe siècle, par l’Institut canadien de Montréal, cette censure subit durant les années 1930 une opposition plus organisée ; le clergé déploie alors de nouveaux moyens de contrôle, plus prescriptifs, mais en vain. L’arrivée en masse des Crime comics entraîne une judiciarisation du contrôle de l’imprimé et, partant, dépouille l’Église de son pouvoir.
