Abstract
The author follows James Hillman in interpreting the contemporary breakdown of work as a symptom of an Economic unconscious. Vico’s notion of work as imaginative ingenuity is used to challenge capitalism’s single-minded linkage between work and economics. This opens the possibility of identifying, as suggested by Hillman, a work instinct understood in terms of the gestural hand and the drive to make meaningful contact with the world. Work is then related to the common good in connection to the social dimension of life that Vico associates with the sensus communis.
