Bankers at the Gate: Microfinance and the high cost of borrowed logics

Abstract
In this paper we examine the evolution of modern-day microfinance and its efficacy as an approach to stimulating entrepreneurship and alleviating poverty. We draw upon insights from institutional theory and examine the fusion of banking and development logics. In doing so, it is observed that the logic from the field of commercial banking effectively supplants or hijacks the mission of the development logic. We provide a number of plausible accounts, both theoretically and practically as to why and how this occurs and discuss implications for entrepreneurship and poverty alleviation more generally.
