Abstract
Devant le déclin et la privatisation de la sphère publique, une forme d’activisme revendique la création d’espaces publics alternatifs. Ce mouvement international, qui prend parfois la forme de zones autonomes à défendre, est présent aussi à Montréal. Le collectif Kabane77 lutte depuis 2012 pour redonner vie à un ancien hangar industriel dans le quartier du Mile-End afin d’en faire un laboratoire de pratiques expérimentales à la fois artistiques et sociales, un lieu d’écologie humaine qui abritera un pôle de production, de diffusion et de partage des savoirs. Cet article est une étude des efforts de ce collectif pour se réapproprier un espace public contre les intentions de la Ville de Montréal. Dans un premier temps, nous démontrerons que, si le collectif Kabane77 tente d’ouvrir une brèche dans la sphère publique, il en est toutefois exclu par le silence médiatique et politique autour de leurs revendications. Deuxièmement, nous soutiendrons que le groupe dispose des caractéristiques d’un contre-public subalterne.
