Abstract
Saint-Malo entretient une relation complexe avec le Canada au cours du long xvie siècle. La figure de Jacques Cartier, aujourd’hui immédiatement associée à l’exploration et à la colonisation de l’Amérique française, n’est aucunement emblématique des choix privilégiés par cette ville. En effet, les marchands concentrent leurs activités sur la pêche saisonnière ou la traite de fourrures mais s’opposent aux projets de colonisation permanente sur le continent, bien que plusieurs Malouins aient joué un rôle déterminant dans l’établissement des premiers colons français en Amérique. Dans les mémoires collectives, Jacques Cartier lui-même fut longtemps oublié : ce n’est qu’à partir du xixe siècle qu’il fait l’objet d’une réappropriation historique et patrimoniale en tant que « découvreur du Canada », même si son image est partiellement éclipsée par celle d’autres « grands hommes » malouins associés à la représentation d’une cité corsaire au cœur de la construction identitaire malouine actuelle.
