Abstract
Nous avons besoin d’une meilleure compréhension du rôle des habitats domestiques dans la formation des relations sociales du passé. Ici, les maisons-longues iroquoiennes du Nord sont étudiées en tant que système sociotechnique, au sens de Pfaffenberger (1992). Cette approche permet d’apprécier comment les relations sociales étaient générées et contestées lors des activités de construction et d’occupation des maisons. J’examine un échantillon de maisons-longues pré-colombiennes du sud de l’Ontario, au Canada. La variation des aspects de la construction de la maison, de la disposition spatiale et du rituel indique que les réseaux sociotechniques associés avec les différentes maisons étaient variables en échelle, en durabilité et dans leur organisation. Ce qui émerge est l’impression qu’une tension dynamique et conductrice entre les forces de la collectivisation et de l’atomisation, de l’inclusion et de l’exclusion, est au cœur de la vie de la maison-longue.
