Job Search of Immigrants: Role of Cultural Knowledge, Work Orientation, and Future Orientation

Abstract
We study the moderating roles of country-level cultural value dimension of future orientation and individual-level work orientation on the positive relationship between job search self-efficacy and job-search effort in a sample of 240 Canadian immigrants from 31 different countries. Our sample includes new immigrants with less than 5 years in Canada. We used Hierarchical Linear Modeling to take into account the nesting effect of affiliation of these immigrants to different country cultures. We are testing and extending Theory of Planned Behavior to explain job search for immigrants and explaining the relationship between their intentions and behavior. We found a significant positive relationship between immigrant job seeker’s cultural knowledge of the host country and job search self-efficacy. We also found a significant positive relationship between job seeking effort and number of job interviews.
