Bien qu’on sache que l’immunisation procure des bienfaits d’importance vitale pour les enfants, on l’accuse parfois de causer toute une série de maladies aux causes inconnues (p. ex., troubles envahissants du développement [TED], sclérose en plaques et mort subite du nourrisson). Ce n’est pas surprenant,puisque les vaccins sont courants et que les humains sont programmés pour attribuer une causalité aux événements qui précèdent un incident. Nous utilisons tous la logique « après…, en raison de ». C’est ainsi que nous avons appris en bas âge à ne pas toucher au rond d’une cuisinière qui chauffe.Malheureusement, cette logique peut comporter des failles. L’évaluation de la causalité exige un examen attentif de toute une série de facteurs. Au-delà du lien temporel, il faut évaluer la cohérence de l’observation, la puissance et la spécificité de l’association ainsi que la plausibilité biologique avantd’attribuer la causalité [1],[2]. Le présent article analyse de récentes controverses entourant l’immunisation et les TED et conclut qu’aucune donnée n’appuie une association entre ces deux éléments. Il remplace le document de principes de la Société canadienne de pédiatrie publié en 2001 sur le même sujet [3].
