Abstract
Originating in the work of David Sibley in 1995, the term “geographies of exclusion” refers to the ways through which some social groups are signaled as being unwelcome in urban and rural spaces. Exclusion is structural in nature and is seen as the product of nuanced forms of social pressure and negative interpersonal interaction. It suggests that some forms of visible difference from mainstream society, such as differences associated with race, class, ethnicity, gender, ableism, or age, lead to experiences of not belonging in public and semipublic spaces.
