Abstract
Cet article analyse le discours des dirigeants de la Commission des écoles catholiques de Montréal (CECM) pour justifier leurs politiques de promotion des valeurs chrétiennes et d’intégration des nouveaux immigrants entre 1973 et 1998. Au cours de cette période, la volonté d’ouverture à l’ensemble des cultures prônée par la CECM et sa mission spécifique de former de bons catholiques vont, en effet, créer des tensions au sein même de cette importante institution scolaire publique. En tenant compte des nombreux bouleversements qui marquent cette période de vingt-cinq ans, nous tenterons de comprendre comment une grande commission scolaire urbaine, et résolument catholique, a fait face à l’arrivée massive d’immigrants allophones et souvent non catholiques. Cette analyse permet de mieux comprendre les rapports, souvent complexes, qui lient religion, éducation et intégration des communautés culturelles dans une société moderne.
