Au cours de la seconde moitié du xixe siècle, la construction du roman national s’appuie sur la redécouverte de l’Antiquité gauloise tout particulièrement en Champagne septentrionale où de nombreuses et importantes découvertes sont effectuées. Les érudits locaux s’emparent de cette thématique d’étude et notamment d’un objet très symbolique : le torque. Cet objet, en étant tout à la fois objet d’échange intellectuel, patrimonial, fiduciaire, etc., est au cœur d’un système réticulaire scientifique, d’information voire marchand et il permet même aux réseaux de savants de se construire, de se renforcer et de se définir.
