Abstract
Secularismo y laicidad son términos que han sido asumidos en occidente como elementos fundamentales de la modernidad sociopolítica. El proceso histórico seguido por ambos fenómenos hasta instalarse en ciertas naciones no sigue un patrón común, ni mucho menos obedece a un modelo universal. Al ser, ambos, fenómenos que ocurren en medios sociales muy diferentes y en estrecho vínculo con dicho medio, ocurre que en cada región del mundo los procesos de secularización y laicización han descrito un camino diferente en el curso del cual el concepto mismo ha adquirido una fisonomía propia. El trabajo que a continuación se presenta tiene por objetivo analizar como ocurre en Cuba, última colonia americana de la muy católica España, el proceso de tránsito de la sociedad confesional a la sociedad laica. Además, pretendemos esbozar las características que dicho proceso adquiere en el país caribeño. Teniendo en cuenta la complejidad que dicho proceso adquiere en Cuba a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XX, las fronteras temporales del presente artículo se extienden desde los inicios de la colonia hasta el inicio de la República.
