The Role of Orality in Robert Morin’s <i>Le nèg’</i> and <i>Quiconque meurt, meurt à douleur</i>

Abstract
The general goal of this article is to shed a new light on the role of orality in two of Robert Morin’s productions, Le nèg’ (or The Negro in English, released in 2002) and Quiconque meurt, meurt à douleur (or Whoever Dies, Dies in Pain in English, released in 1998). Inspired by the geo-philosophy developed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, the author establishes the distinction between “mise-enscène orality” in Le nèg’, in which orality is self-consciously performed in the film’s space, and “metteur-en-scène (storyteller) orality” in Quiconque meurt, meurt à douleur, in which orality is captured “directly” by the filmmaker and his camera. This distinction not only helps us better understand Robert Morin’s films and contributions to Québec cinema at large, but also lays the foundation of a new theoretical framework which can be used as a tool to analyze the close and specific relation between orality and the film medium in the work of other filmmakers.
