L’armorial général, dit d’Hozier, a été réalisé à partir de 1696 à la demande de Louis xiv avec la volonté de répertorier toutes les armes portées en France… et bientôt de faire payer un enregistrement administratif à toute personne capable de verser vingt livres, qu’elle porte des armes ou pas. Ce document permet donc indirectement de tracer une ligne au sein de la société délimitant cette élite du reste de la population. On constate que très peu de graveurs y figurent, ce qui montre combien ils occupent alors une place subalterne dans la société (loin des charges juridiques, mais même sous les libraires ou les peintres), sauf à obtenir d’autres charges plus prestigieuses, parfois liées à leur métier.
