Abstract
Nous analyserons le roman de Pierre Lasry Une Juive en Nouvelle-France (2000) où est relatée l’histoire authentique d’Esther Brandeau, unique personne juive arrivée clandestinement en 1738 en Nouvelle-France sous une identité masculine puis rembarquée pour la France en 1739 parce qu’elle refusait de devenir catholique. Nous montrerons la continuité entre ses pérégrinations et celles de ses ancêtres marranes fuyant l’Inquisition en 1498. Nous envisagerons la double dimension géographique et spirituelle de ses errances. Portant le nom de la reine Esther biblique voilant son origine juive pour sauver son peuple, Esther Brandeau emblématise la dimension féminine du marranisme. Le métissage linguistique par lequel des mots d’hébreu et de portugais sont mêlés au français présentifie le marranisme comme un « écartèlement » entre les langues, représentatif de la « civilisation juive en marche vers la modernité » (Lasry 2007). Nous verrons que le roman dévoile la dimension intergénérationnelle inédite d’un marranisme des origines sous-jacent à l’identité québécoise postmoderne.
