Parmi les jeux d’enfance, la cabane tient une place spécifique dans le développement de l’être humain par les moments d’initiation, de transition, de socialisation, qui soutiennent l’évolution de l’enfant et de l’adolescent. Mais, si les jeux de cabane perdurent aujourd’hui, la pratique a évolué au fil des générations. Elle est alors significative de la place donnée à l’enfant dans nos aménagements et dans nos choix éducatifs. Cet article analyse les différentes fonctions psychiques et sociales de la cabane, comme art constructeur, apprentissage des relations à l’espace, aux autres et à la nature. Nous nous intéressons d’abord aux cabanes que construisent les enfants et aux processus de subjectivation, de socialisation et d’écologisation qui s’y déploient. Puis, nous explorons quelques formes de « cabanes » d’adultes, construites sous prétexte de chasse, de travail, de loisir. La pluralité de ces pratiques de cabanes est ensuite analysée comme pratique d’un lieu, expérience d’un mode d’habiter et questionnement d’une manière d’habiter contemporaine.
