Abstract
Brian Teare meditates on the body in pain, on pain as a way to “mark” or “shape” the I. “I am made an object by pain” he writes, but then “who is the subject of pain”? Engaging Elaine Scarry, Maurice Blanchot, and the paintings of Agnes Martin, Teare asks how the “I” who feels pain can communicate such experience to others, and can thereby become once again a subject. Through the metaphors that art provides, Teare finds embodiment's approximate expression.
