Régulièrement étudiée en histoire, la seconde motorisation des centres-villes français pendant les « Trente Glorieuses » est souvent présentée comme une victoire culturelle et politique d’un progressisme techniciste et de la consommation de masse. Pourtant, l’adhésion des Français à ces nouveaux modèles paraît plus complexe. Cet article propose un aperçu des rapports d’habitants de Lyon et Marseille à la motorisation de leurs villes. Au travers de leurs courriers de plainte, on observe une renégociation de l’espace des centres-villes, disputés entre nouveaux et anciens usages, et la place qu’ont pu prendre ces citadins dans la composition d’un nouvel environnement urbain partagé.
