Abstract
Les musées d’ethnologie en Europe, instruments de promotion de l’expansion coloniale au XIXe siècle, connaissent aujourd’hui une profonde réforme et de reformulation de leur discours. Se pose pour eux la question de savoir jusqu’à quel point un musée peut reformuler son discours pour rendre compte de la complexité de la situation postcoloniale et des liens qui la traversent (Smouts, 2007) sans saper sa propre autorité. Nous étudions cette question en explorant les stratégies scénographiques et les déplacements touchant l’architecture dans trois expositions temporaires présentées au Musée royal d’Afrique centrale (MRAC) de Belgique entre 2005 et 2012. Déployant un discours réflexif radical, les expositions semblent, par des moyens variés, ouvrir la voie à la formulation d’un discours alternatif, voire d’un contre-discours, sur le passé colonial et ses résonances contemporaines. Cependant, par le recours à l’humour, l’appel à la nostalgie et l’usage de l’art contemporain dans les expositions, elles permettent de ménager des espaces discursifs ambivalents, où s’atténue nettement cette critique. Les expositions contribuent ainsi en définitive plutôt à préserver, et même à réaffirmer, la légitimité du projet muséal.
