La place du patrimoine dans les études scientifiques est sans cesse grandissante. Le concept de patrimoine évolue et se transforme grandement depuis plusieurs années. Le patrimoine urbain, surtout dans les quartiers historiques comme celui du Vieux-Québec, prend de l’importance. Ils sont, depuis les années 1990, animés. Par une étude de cas du site patrimonial du Vieux-Québec, cette recherche tente d’identifier et d’analyser l’utilisation du décor patrimonial d’un site, construit par un processus de patrimonialisation, par l’événementiel. La stratégie d’enquête est basée sur l’analyse d’articles et de livres scientifiques et gouvernementaux, également sur une compilation statistique des grands événements ayant eu lieu sur le territoire ainsi que d’une analyse de ces événements par les discours tenus dans les journaux, par les guides touristiques et par les affiches et les vidéos promotionnelles. Le décor du site étudié est en construction depuis le 19e siècle par un processus de patrimonialisation débuté par de grandes commémorations historiques. La fonction événementielle du secteur connait une hausse exponentielle depuis les années 1980, les principales causes sont les grands événements commémoratifs ayant lieu dans la ville et le mouvement de festivalisation mondial. Le décor bonifié par la patrimonialisation est utilisé par la fonction événementielle afin de promouvoir les grands événements. Le décor est utilisé directement par une évocation historique, surtout lors d’événements culturels et commémoratifs, comme les Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France; il est également utilisé indirectement, comme une image de carte postale, par des événements comme le Red Bull Crashed Ice.
