Abstract

-- ABSTRACT: Communication, especially with the digital era, has become a complex, multi-faceted action. In order to be competent communicators, we must be able to use a variety of elements to receive (read), understand and create (write) multimodal texts on multimodal media. In this sense, students with reading and writing difficulties are more likely to need and benefit from remediation. However, very little is known about the practices of orthopédagogues, first-line counselors of these young people with learning difficulties. This research aims to identify remedial practices using multimodal literacy among high school students. More specifically, the observed and reported practices of seven orthopédagogues, relative to multimodal literacy, are documented. Three conceptual foundations guided and structured the study: 1) professional skills in remediation, 2) learning difficulties in reading and writing and 3) multimodal literacy skills. A qualitative and exploratory methodology is used, a choice encouraged and motivated by the limited data available on remedial practices, particularly in Quebec (Yin, 2015, Van der Maren, 2003). Furthermore, the case study was chosen in order to render an interpretation as true as possible to the experiences and perceptions of the participants. \nThe main results allow a better knowledge, in secondary education, of 1) the different abilities called upon in remediation and 2) the remedial practices in literacy (according, in part, to the different components and skills in multimodal literacy). The importance of looking more closely at high school remedial practices, if only to learn even more about them, is also reiterated. The data collected provides an overview of the role of the orthopédagogues in high schools and also confirms the imprecision and the great variability surrounding it. Important elements are provided and support, among other things, the need for more vocational training in remediation and in relation to the concept of literacy itself. Thus, it might be easier to clarify the skills and roles of these professionals and enhance their skills and knowledge related to literacy, as to provide a more contemporary view of reading and writing and, perhaps, even consider and present notions of multimodal literacy.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
