Design of a Flexible Broadband RHCP/LHCP Polarizer Unit-Cell

Abstract
A broadband, flexible and quad-layer unit-cell is presented for designing a polarizer at 19 GHz for satellite applications in the Ka band. A periodic arrangement of the proposed unit cell converts linearly polarized incident fields into a circularly polarized LHCP or RHCP fields. The element is based on a gridded Jerusalem cross which achieves a full transmission phase difference between the two orthogonal polarizations. The maximum insertion loss is 0.4 dB in the band of 18.2-20.2 GHz. The 3dB axial ratio bandwidth is 15%. The full-wave analysis of HFSS validates the performance characteristics of the proposed polarizer unit cell.
