Abstract
Summary Ecotopia is a quasi‐ethnographic novel influenced by anthropology. Some of its fictional practices have been adopted in the actual world since publication in 1975. Set two decades after Green secessionists achieve national independence for the U.S. Northwest, an American journalist‐fieldworker describes Ecotopians’ strange new ecological customs. Author Callenbach constructively criticized and inflenced his unsustainable culture by comparing it to an invented alternative.
