Abstract
Depuis près d’un siècle et demi, un mystérieux portrait intrigue les férus d’histoire du Québec. Une huile censée représenter Jeanne Mance, acquise par les Hospitalières de l’Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal autour des années 1870, résiste à tous les efforts d’authentification menés jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Cet article révèle que le tableautin a été peint par l’artiste parisien Louis Ernest Dugardin et qu’il date du 19e siècle. L’ensemble de l’iconographie mancienne reposant sur ce portrait, le faciès couramment prêté à Jeanne Mance serait donc factice, selon toute vraisemblance.
