A Fault Detection Technique to Alleviate Loss of Communication Links in Distribution Networks

Abstract
This paper presents a current measurement-based fault detection technique to substitute for the utility-DG fault detection communication links in distribution systems. The proposed technique detects the change in current of the DG recloser over an adequate time window size and sends a tripping signal if the change is greater than a preset value. This tripping signal, in combination with the pickup setting of the DG recloser, determines when the tripping sequence of the interconnecting breaker begins. During the investigations of this paper, the proposed technique is validated within a utility-DG interconnecting recloser for system fault detection while the communication link with the utility head-end recloser is disabled. Multiple time domain simulations are conducted to ascertain the efficacy of the proposed technique to replace the communication link between the DG-recloser and the utility head-end recloser while maintaining the existing fuse-recloser coordination in the distribution network. These time domain simulations include different fault types, fault resistance and sudden load changes. The evaluation is demonstrated through use of the EMTP-RV software with a typical distribution network as a test bench.
