Abstract
A criação da personagem sombria de Catilina, que domina a peça de Ben Jonson, Catilina, sua conspiração, e resultado de uma leitura atenta pelo autor, que se dedicou a fontes antigas. Na sua reelaboração pessoal da história, Jonson modela fatos e personagens históricos, e os transpõe do codigo narrativo para o teatral. Na sua transposição em palavras e ações daquilo que e narrado pelas fontes, o impacto no público e amplificado: o processo de demonização de Catilina, que começou na Antiquidade com Cícero e Salusto, e completado. A análise de Cíc. Catil. 1, 16 e de Sal. Catil. 22 serve como exemplo: a forma mágico-sacra usada por esses autores antigos atribui um valor negativo ao carisma de Catilina e entrega à posteridade o retrato do genio mau e do subversivo por excelência.
