Abstract
En s’efforçant de nuancer la critique marxiste de l’économie capitaliste, Rioux montre la forte domination culturelle qui accompagne un pouvoir économique gouverné par les « lois » du marché. Il en montre la force au regard de la culture dite canadienne, contraint d’admettre sur cette base que la culture s’érige sous la tutelle du « développement économique », dont elle fait les frais. Le développement culturel se conçoit dans cette voie en termes de produits offerts sur le marché. La libre circulation des biens culturels conduit inéluctablement à l’homogénéisation de la demande et, de fil en aiguille, ne manque pas de produire le nivellement des cultures nationales et des œuvres dignes de ce nom, comme en témoigne avec éloquence la culture de masse qui teinte le cinéma, la télévision et la publicité.
