Abstract
This paper presents a novel approach to integrating frequency and voltage regulation constraints into the optimal planning model of an isolated microgrid. The proposed generalized planning platform allows investigation of the feasibility of renewable energy (RE) deployment in remote communities, in multiple stages, considering the impacts of economic, technical and operational constraints on the planning of isolated microgrids, consisting of diesel generators, RE resources and energy storage systems (ESS). The platform also enables the study of the impact of ESS integration on increasing the penetration level of renewables while complying with the frequency and voltage regulation constraints.
