Abstract
The struggles of Julian Stryjkowski (1905–96) to reconcile his Polish, Jewish, communist, and queer identities continued throughout his life. These struggles were often the main themes of much of his work. This article analyzes three of those texts – Na wierzbach … nasze skrzypce (In the willows ... our fiddles) (1974), Tommaso del Cavaliere (Tommaso dei Cavalieri) (1982), and his final published work of fiction, Milczenie (Silence) (1993). They reveal his rejection of the seemingly necessary choice others wished him to make between those identities. Instead of accepting the homogenous, Stryjkowski embraced the heterogeneous, an act that was at once reconciliatory and defiant – defiant against normative ideologies of nationalism and homophobia.
