O artigo investiga como a desconfiança se apresenta enquanto um elemento fundamental na obra de Christian Petzold, analisando os diferentes níveis em que ela se faz presente: uma condição política que existente em meio às narrativas; uma estratégia para um jogo atoral autoconsciente; e um meio pelo qual se cria distanciamento no espectador. Petzold dá continuidade às propostas estéticas de Douglas Sirk e Rainer Werner Fassbinder, ao utilizar o domínio dos gêneros cinematográficos enquanto um terreno para um cinema político, buscando uma encenação que expõe os processos sociais e históricos que formam a sociedade retratada em seus filmes.
