Abstract
El criollismo fue la literatura regionalista de afirmación cultural mediante la cual los escritores americanos de habla hispana representaron la singularidad étnica, fáunica, vegetal y geográfica de sus países en una época en la cual las nuevas naciones celebraban el primer siglo de su independencia. Este artículo presenta una revisión histórica del criollismo al reflexionar sobre la variedad de contenidos y expresiones que le dieron forma y al postularlo como un movimiento “paraguas” bajo el cual se han acogido diversas narrativas. En el bicentenario de las naciones americanas y a un siglo del inicio del criollismo, se hace necesario revisitarlo para retomar su estudio como una de las literaturas continentales que ayudó a definir esencias autóctonas y forjar identidades nacionales modernas y originales.
