Jean Bernard Mérian est l’un des principaux représentants de l’empirisme à l’Académie de Berlin. Cet article s’attache à montrer comment s’articulent, chez Mérian, la critique de la métaphysique systématique, fondée sur une méthode synthétique empruntée aux mathématiques, et la défense d’un ethos philosophique nouveau, l’esprit académique ou éclectique. Nous verrons la solidarité entre les termes «empirique», «académique» et «éclectique» chez Mérian, et nous examinerons comment la pratique éclectique de la philosophie lui offre une méthode de comparaison et de critique des prétentions des systèmes philosophiques, ouvrant la possibilité d’une conception éclectique de l’histoire des débats philosophiques.
