Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Abstract: The study looked into the effect of medial vowels in the measurement of Chinese phonological awareness. The results show children perform differently in the presence or absence of medial vowels. Specifically, third graders tended to delete medial vowel along with the initial consonant; the same trend was not found with fifth graders, who were successful at isolating the initial consonant. Differences between different types of rimes containing medial vowel letters were also found. This developmental trend needs to be considered in the design of Chinese phonological awareness tasks for Chinese children. INTRODUCTION Phonological awareness has been a hot topic in the past thirty years, not only for teachers and parents but also educational and developmental psychologists. The close ties between phonological awareness and English word reading acquisition found by Bradley & Bryant (1983) triggered an explosion of studies on the relation between phonological awareness and reading acquisition and studies on characteristics and development of phonological awareness sub-skills, such as syllables, onsets-rimes, and phonemes. One of the major factors that shape the development of phonological awareness is linguistic structures (Caravolas & Bruck 1993), which started a whole round of studies on the development of phonological awareness in bilingual children (Durgunoglu & Oney 1999). Among all the sub-skills or tasks used in the measurement of phonological awareness, phoneme awareness is probably the single most important one. For instance, in a phoneme deletion task, a test of phonemic awareness requires children to articulate what is left of a word if a syllable initial, middle or final consonant is removed, for example, in the word cat, when the initial consonant is removed, only at is left; when the same sound is removed in the word six, what is left is /sis/. Actually, this task is better named consonant deletion task because it is usually the consonant that is deleted. Phoneme deletion skills are closely related to English word reading skills for primary school children (Perfetti et al 1987). It is the most predictive of English word reading for 8-9 year old English children (Huang & Hanley 1995) and for Chinese children living in English rich environment (Gottardo et al 2001). In recent years, as more and more studies are being conducted on children living in mainland China where English is still taught as a foreign language, the importance of Chinese phonological awareness for Chinese and English literacy acquisition is being acknowledged too (for example, Chen & Chen 2008). However, there has not been any systematic study on the effect of the linguistic structure of Chinese language on the development of Chinese phonological awareness. This study is such an attempt. 1.1 Chinese syllable structure and phoneme awareness tasks The attempt to study the effect of Chinese pinyin structure on phonological awareness originates from the orthographic depth theory proposed by Seymour, Aro and Erskine (2003). …

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
