Lancé en 2000, ce projet de recherche international consiste à étudier l'injection et le stockage géologique de CO2 dans les champs de pétrole épuisés du sud-est de la Saskatchewan. Il est réalisé parallèlement à deux injections commerciales de CO2 où d'importants volumes de gaz (2,8 millions de mégatonnes [Mt] par année) sont injectées afin d'accroître la production de pétrole. Le CO2, un sous-produit de la Synfuels Plant de la Dakota Gasification Company, est transporté par une canalisation de 323 kilomètres au champ d'EnCana à Weyburn et au champ d'Apache à Midale. La phase finale du projet de recherche de l'Agence internationale de l'énergie (AIE) [2007-2011] prend appui sur les réalisations de la première phase (2000-2004) pour mettre en place le cadre favorisant la mise en oeuvre du stockage géologique de CO2 à l'échelle mondiale. Plus particulièrement, le projet permettra de mettre au point les solutions technologiques essentielles à la conception, à la mise en oeuvre, au contrôle et à la vérification de projets de stockage géologique de CO2, et d'en faire la démonstration, ainsi que de favoriser et d'accélérer l'élaboration de bonnes politiques gouvernementales en ce qui a trait aux règlements, aux communications publiques et au contexte opérationnel.
