What does it mean to be francisé? The experience of so-called allophone immigrants in a bastion of Québécois tradition

Abstract
This article explores what, throughout Quebec, is represented by the interpellation to learn the national language in order to be a part of civil society. The francisation of immigrants is articulated in terms of moral contracts, linguistic categories and division of national space. So-called allophone immigrants—those with no official Canadian language as their first language—have a duty to become French speakers, risking being judged linguistically impaired or likely to engage in illegitimate language practices. The regions, traditional strongholds of the Quebec nation, are imagined as a perfect site for francizing them. Basing my efforts on ethnographic work, I suggest that allophone immigrants in the region invest a lot in their own francisation, but they must interpret this interpellation that mythifies and mystifies what being a French speaker is. At the same time, this indeterminacy allows the local population to continually rework the boundaries of legitimate membership.
