Ce projet consiste à examiner la faisabilité géologique, technique et économique d'un projet de captage et de stockage de CO2 (CSC) à l'échelle mondiale, en association avec l'usine Spectra Energy de Fort Nelson, en Colombie-Britannique, la plus grande usine de traitement de gaz naturel acide en Amérique du Nord. Dans la région de Fort Nelson, le gaz brut contient naturellement un niveau élevé de CO2, lequel est retiré au cours du traitement et est actuellement rejeté dans l'atmosphère. Si l'on démontre la faisabilité du projet, ce CO2 serait comprimé, déshydraté, refroidi en courant concentré et injecté dans des formations salines profondes, à une profondeur de plus de deux kilomètres, pour y être séquestré de façon permanente. Ce projet vise à démontrer la faisabilité technique d'injecter une grande quantité de CO2 brut dans des formations salines profondes pour le stocker en permanence. Si le projet est une réussite, il préparera le terrain à l'un des plus grands projets de CSC de ce type dans le monde.
